The Oyo State Government has announced a week-long line-up of activities to mark the 50th anniversary of the state’s creation, blending reflection, culture and forward-looking dialogue.
Unveiling the programme at a press briefing in Ibadan, Chairman of the Anniversary Committee and former House of Representatives member, Honourable Saheed Akinade-Fijabi, said the celebration would feature religious services, cultural exhibitions, awards, as well as a public lecture titled: Consolidating the Legacy, Navigating the Present and Reimagining the Future.
He explained that the golden jubilee activities were designed to combine thanksgiving, intellectual engagement and cultural expression, in line with the development vision of Governor Seyi Makinde.
According to him, the festivities will commence on January 26 with a lecture and address by Governor Makinde at the University of Ibadan and will run through February 3, culminating in a dinner night to honour distinguished citizens and contributors to the state’s growth.
Other activities include health outreach programmes across the 33 local government areas, film shows in the six geo-political zones, a carnival, symposiums, sports events and empowerment programmes for women.
Oyo State was created on February 3, 1976, from the former Western Region, with Ibadan as its capital.
